I’ve started doing a new series of posts (simply because my blog is really, really, REALLY bare and lacking in original content) about the modern ecology of Jones Falls and Gwynns Falls watershed. This is my story as a volunteer environmental scientist for a non-profit, Blue Water Baltimore. (duh duh)

The elusive Compactus discus playeria in its natural habitat. Notice that it employs both natural camouflage and artificial camouflage (mud) to hide from its predator, Homo sapien baltimorea. This particular species is native to the Gwynns Falls of the Baltimore Metro Area. Had my colleague not pointed out this rarely seen specimen to me, I would have missed this precious gem of the Baltimore Metro Area ecology. Today was a good day.

Music Fact: Classical musicians are 50% more likely to suffer permanent hearing loss than rock musicians. This is almost entirely due to exposure to bass drums; a single orchestral bass drum is louder than an electric guitar at maximum amplification, and provides one-third of the audible power of a standard 75-piece symphony orchestra.

*confused blinking*

I can attest to this, being in wind ensembles, marching bands, and symphony orchestras. I’ve lost a percentage of my hearing because of it, that’s not to say, however, that what I have left isn’t a finely tuned instrument. I can still tell when some moron is out of tune when an entire ensemble is playing.

Comedian and journalist Stella Young is tired of people telling her she’s an “inspiration” just for getting up in the morning. In a hilarious, hard-hitting, and thought-provoking talk at TEDxSydney, she explains why.

A lovely story about Romney/Ryan.

This is the best, most concise explanation of the past four years ever.

I just really enjoy this analogy. A very clever metaphor.

Pretty much a good summary of what the Republicans have, in general, done to this country over the past 30 years since they elected Regan to office and began the travesty of becoming a party of “wholesome family values.”
